Korte, R. (2010). ‘First, get to know them’: a relational view of organizational socialization. Human Resource Development International, 13(1), 27-43.

This article looked at socialisation of new comers into a large organization. Although it focused primarily on the interaction with individuals and groups it did high light the importance of learning for the new comer.

Socialisation is important to new comers as they try to fit into the organization and learning is a common thread throught the models. New comers need to learn what to do, how to do it and why (i.e. organisational values) it is done. Those that experience low levels of inclusion tend to feel isolated, exploited and under appreciated and the levels of support given affect their commitment to the organization. Social cognition describes how individuals acquire. encode and recall information.

I believe that the information in this article supports the use of a tool, such as Moodle, to help new comers understand the values of an organisation and why they do what they do. Further information can be provided of different aspects of the organization including whos-who and how to get further information.
